Local information

Almeria

The region of Almeria is one of the most charming and unspoilt areas in south-eastern Spain. Enjoying the sunniest and warmest climate in the whole of Europe, it is known as ‘El Rincon del Embrujo’ or ‘the corner of enchantment’. The coast is completely unspoilt. To the east of Almeria we find the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata – Nijar natural park. This is an arid desert landscape and the annual rainfall here is less than 200mm. It is sparsely populated, few villages and a very low population density. Visitors feel a sense of exploration here as many of the coves can only be reached on foot. This area is particularly popular with nature lovers and back-packers.

This is the driest part of Europe with approximately 320 days of sunshine each year, The Almeria region is agricultural, with many greenhouses and fields growing a variety of produce such as tomatoes, lettuces, melons, lemons, oranges and olives. The Almeria region is one of the last parts of Spain to be developed, and does not have the mass tourism of the other ‘costas’. This is the real Spain!

Mojacar

Mojacar Playa has been developed over the last two decades and is a lively resort with a lot to offer Its beaches are 17km long but only 7km have been developed and the majority of the remainder being designated an area of beauty.

The promenade offers a variety of beach bars, restaurants both local and international, hotels, discos and shops, there is also the Parque Commercial shopping centre selling a range of items including clothes, china, souvenirs along with café bar’s to relax with a sangria whilst having lunch.

Mojacar Pueblo is a picturesque sight of white washed buildings and steep winding cobbled streets perched high on a hill in the Sierra Cabrera, that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. A Moorish influence dating back to the 8th century is still visible today.

Mojacar Pueblo holds a market on Wednesdays and a flea market on Sundays.

In June each year there is a Moors and Christians festival which lasts for 3 days, this is well worth seeing, the two sides stage mock battles and true to history the Christians are always victorious.

The Central Commercial Mediterraneo – with many different shops, eg, clothes, jewellery, shoes, ceramics, rugs, including several coffee shops on the three levels.

There are local fiestas on May 15, June 10 and 24, August 28 and October 7.

There is a Tourist Information Centre on the seafront opposite the Central Commercial.

Garrucha – 3 km away – is the big game fishing centre for Spain. There is also a huge street market there on Fridays. There are lots of shops – a lovely prom – and lots of bars and restaurants.

Mojacar is a short drive from several of the best golf courses in the area, Valle del Este, Desert Springs, Cortijo Grande and Marina de la Torre.
